Content-based classes

Are you a new EIE student and don't know which classes to choose? The third period, just after lunch, has four Content-based classes: Language Games, Public Speaking, Creative Writing, and Business English. Once you choose, you will be taking that class for two weeks. We hope to help you decide your class by providing some information.



2 week Content-based class

Time: 2:00-3:15

1. Language Games









- Professor: Tom Webster

- Goals:
  • to give students as much speaking practice as possible and have fun!!


- Contents: The Language Games class is composed of various kinds of games. Teams are grouped randomly every time, so you can join and enjoy with various people. For example, activities such as “Dilemma”,”Alibi” and “Password” are played with classmates.


- Amount of Homework: None!

- Recommendation: This lecture is open to everyone who wants to improve English skill through conversation with both the teacher and friends. There are no qualifications required to enjoy the games. Students of all levels can benefit.



2. Public Speaking







- Professor: Greg Skwarok

- Goals: 
  • to make students become more confident speaking in front of groups
  • to enhance communication with anyone or everyone
  • to enhance English skills


- Contents: If you take the Public Speaking course, you will be taught a few basic tools to make effective speeches. In addition, there will be a lot of chances to have presentations in groups or in front of the class. Furthermore, you will get feedback from the professor and their peers.

- Amount of Homework: You must practice your speaking, including setting up a topic or outline of presentation. Only, practice can make your speeches perfect.

- Recommendation: Everyone needs this course - any university student! This will be very good chance to practice for those of you who are very afraid of speaking in front of others.



3. Creative Writing








- Professor: Chris Weagle

- Goals: 
  • to practice writing
  • to learn some literary terms
  • to practice descriptive writing



- Contents: Creative Writing is both serious and free at the same time. Sometimes it feels like English Literature class. You don't need a great amount of English or grammar skills, just a perceptive and creative mind. You will prepare a notebook, where you will write your journals and glue handouts or anything you like. Sometimes Chris will take you out on a short field trip to do some creative work. You will learn about figurative language, poems and haiku. Also, you can learn some practical tips for writing college essays.

- Amount of Homework: You will usually write journal entries or short poems. Length doesn't matter, but the topics could be a bit difficult. Sometimes it includes searching a proverb, or collecting photographs.

- Recommendation: This is recommended to those of you who are interested in literature or the art of writing.



4. Business English









- Professor: Bruce Barnes

- Goals:
  • to prepare for business situations such as making phone calls
  • to practice speaking and writing skills


- Contents: Mostly, you and your classmates will be divided into groups and do activities in various scenarios. For example, you will try to convey information or negotiate a deal over the telephone. You will use a real phone and practice with your classmates. You will experience and learn about basic formalities required in business situations.

- Amount of Homework: This class has no homework. All you need to do is participate well in the class.

- Recommendation: This is recommended for those of you who think you might work in an English-speaking office, or for those of you who just want to improve your English skills in general.




So, read these through and choose your classes well, then you will be able to enjoy the EIE even more!
